None the less, even battery charger and meters is directly related with the battery lifecycle. If you can perform proper maintenance, it could last for 5-6 years.
How much are golf cart batteries?
It depends on how much you are expecting from the battery. Besides, the varieties of battery feature also cause the price. Mainly, it depends on the volt and amp per hourly, the higher the numbers are, and the higher will be the price. Nowadays, there are automation featured batteries are available in the market, which can add some more bucks in the amount.
How to test golf cart batteries?
Test Batteries:
Connect the meter with the battery with a Multi-meter. Check the meter. If you get over 6 volts, then it’s fine. If the reading is lower than 4.1, and then one of the cells of the battery has a bad condition.
Besides, there are some other ways like with a Hydrometer or a Load Testing.

Golf carts are available in two forms. Among two of the forms, the electric carts are getting more and more popular day by day. Because electric golf carts have many advantages over gas golf carts. We will discuss the advantages in the latter part of this article.
We all know that electric golf carts need batteries to run. There are many types of batteries for electric golf carts. Electric golf carts will take the golfer easily and peacefully to their expected area. In this article, one will know many things about electric golf carts and electric golf cart batteries.
Types of golf carts batteries
Let’s start this article by knowing the types of electric golf cart batteries.
Basically, the life cycle and the maintenance of an electric golf cart depend on the type of battery. The capacity and the charging speed also depend on the battery type.
Basically, there are 4 types of batteries available for an electric golf cart. These are:
- Flooded Lead Acid
- AGM Lead Acid
- Gel Lead Acid
- Lithium-ion Battery
The most used battery among these 4 types is the Flooded Lead Acid battery. This battery is suitable for any type of golf cart. Also, this battery is versatile and can be used for off road golf carts also. Only some of the electric golf carts use Gel and AGM lead acid batteries.
But the new invention of the Lithium-ion battery is getting more and more popular day by day. Because it has more power and capacity than a lead acid battery.
Difference between Lead acid and Lithium-ion batteries
As we said before the new invention of the golf lithium-ion cart battery is challenging the golf lead acid battery. There are many reasons why people like to choose Lithium-ion batteries over the Lead acid battery.
Let’s talk about the differences between Lead acid and Lithium-ion batteries.
Weight- The weight of a Lithium-ion battery is 1/4 comparing to the lead acid battery. That means lithium batteries will reduce a huge amount of weight from a golf cart. Reducing the weight will enable the capacity of the cart. If the cart was able to take 2 average people before, then after replacing the lead acid battery with a lithium battery, the golf cart will be able to take 1 more average people. That means using a lithium acid battery will increase the efficiency of the golf cart.
Speed- As the weight of the battery will be reduced by 3 times after replacing the lead acid battery with the lithium battery, the speed of the cart will increase very much. We all know that the lighter the car is the more speed it will produce.
Capacity- The capacity of the lithium battery is way more than the lead battery. At first, the lithium acid battery will produce the accurate voltage to the cart. But the lead acid battery will lose voltage performance from continuous use of the battery. The lead acid battery loses voltage performance more than 70 percent after a couple of months of use.
On the other hand, the lithium battery is completely different in this part. Instead of losing slight battery performance, the battery will maintain the accurate capacity and rated voltage capacity. That means the lithium acid battery will last 3 to 5 times longer than lead acid battery. Therefore the owner of the cart won’t have to buy spend money more on changing batteries.
Maintenance- Maintenance is one of the most irritating things for golf cart owners. The lead acid battery requires maintenance after using the cart couple of days. The battery needs to be cleaned and the user needs to provide water in the batteries. Which is both time consuming and risky. Because sometimes it seems that while watering the battery the chemical inside the battery spills out which can be dangerous.
On the other hand, the lithium battery doesn't need any maintenance and no need to check regularly which saves a huge amount of time and effort.
Charging speed- It seems that golfer thinks about the charging speed more than any other features. Charging speed of a golf cart depends on how often one can take the cart into the course.
Generally, a lead acid battery needs more than 8 hours to get completely charged, which is a huge amount of time. If one has more than one cart in their garage then the charging time will be very painful and irritating. Also, it will raise the amount of electricity bill.
On the other hand, a lithium battery needs a couple of hours to get a full charge. Lithium battery needs less than 3 hours to get fully charged. It also cuts the electricity bill. Charging 2 golf carts at a time won't be a headache at all.
These are the major differences between these two types.
When to replace golf cart batteries?
The time of replacing a golf cart battery depends on many features of the cart battery. But basically, after 4 to 5 years a golf cart needs to be replaced. Here are the features that will indicate the replacement of the battery.
- The main thing one must consider is the charge time of the battery. Basically, a lead acid battery needs 8 hours or more to get fully charged and a lithium battery needs 3 hours or less to get fully charged. If the battery needs more than its required time to get fully charged then the battery should be immediately replaced.
- A fully charged battery will cover an 18 holes course with ease. But if the battery seems not to able to complete the 18 holes course with full charge then it means the life cycle of the battery is reducing day by day. And the battery needs to be replaced.
- If one sees blisters above the body of the battery or the acid inside the battery is seeping out then it is the sign to change the battery of the cart.
- Check the output voltage of the batteries with a voltmeter. If the output of the battery is very low then the battery needs to be replaced immediately.
